Factors that affect your Virginia car insurance rates

While every insurer uses its own rating methods, premiums are often based on your level of risk, the vehicle you drive and where you live. You may be able to lower your premium by maintaining a safe driving record, choosing a higher deductible, qualifying for discounts or bundling your auto policy with other insurance coverage.

Factors that may affect your car insurance rate in Virginia include:

  • Your age and driving experience
  • Your driving record and claims history
  • The type, value and safety features of your vehicle
  • How much you drive each year
  • Your ZIP code and local accident or theft rates
  • The coverage limits and deductible you choose
  • Available discounts, such as bundling policies

Is Virginia a no-fault state?

No. Virginia is an at-fault state, which means the driver who causes an accident is responsible for the resulting injuries and property damage. That’s different from no-fault states, where personal injury protection (PIP) coverage can help pay certain costs like medical expenses and lost wages after an accident, regardless of who caused it. In Virginia, medical payments (MedPay) coverage is available to help pay medical costs for you or your passengers after a covered accident, regardless of fault.

Virginia car insurance FAQs

At what age does car insurance go down in Virginia?

Car insurance rates typically start to go down after drivers gain more experience, especially in their mid-20s, if they maintain a clean driving record. In Virginia, your rate can still depend on factors like your claims history, vehicle, ZIP code, coverage limits and discounts. Rates can continue to change over time, so it can help to review your auto policy regularly and ask about available savings.

Can I register my car in Virginia with out-of-state insurance?

Generally, no. State law requires vehicles registered in Virginia to be covered by a liability insurance policy issued by an insurance company licensed to do business in Virginia. According to the Virginia DMV, you must first title, then insure and register your vehicle in Virginia within 30 days of moving to the state, and you have 60 days to get a Virginia driver’s license. If you’re active military, an out-of-state student or have questions about your specific situation, contact the Virginia DMV or your insurance company before registering your vehicle.

What is the average cost of car insurance in Richmond, Virginia?

The cost of car insurance in Richmond can vary by ZIP code, driver profile, vehicle, coverage, available discounts, and your limits or deductible. The most recent NAIC Auto Insurance Database Report shows that Virginia drivers paid an average of $1,238 per year for full coverage in 2023. NAIC reports use insurer-reported data on auto insurance costs and does not track city-specific insurance rates. Although some third-party insurance marketplaces publish city-level estimates, the information is typically based on sample profiles or modeled data rather than official city averages.

Can someone drive my car if they are not on my insurance in Virginia?

Yes, in many cases. In Virginia, if a legal driver has your permission to drive your car, they may be covered under your auto policy even if they are not listed on it. This is often called “permissive use.” However, coverage can depend on your policy, the driver and the situation. Someone who regularly drives your car, especially a household member, should generally be listed on your policy to be covered.

Can I still pay the uninsured motor vehicle (UMV) fee?

No. Virginia eliminated the uninsured motor vehicle (UMV) fee on July 1, 2024. Before that date, drivers could pay a fee instead of carrying auto insurance, but the fee did not provide insurance coverage. Under current Virginia law, all registered vehicles must be covered by an auto insurance policy that meets the state’s 50/100/25 minimum liability requirements. The change was made to require insurance coverage for all registered vehicles and help reduce the number of uninsured drivers on Virginia roads.
