What is the average cost of car insurance in California?

California drivers paid an average of $1,217 a year for full coverage (liability, collision and comprehensive) in 2020, according to the most recent data available from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). That’s a little more than the national average of $1,176 per year, the NAIC report shows. Keep in mind that insurance premiums in most states have changed since then. Your cost will also depend on how much coverage you choose, as well as your driving history and the car you drive.

What auto insurance is mandatory in California?

A car insurance policy with a minimum amount of liability coverage is required in California. However, minimum coverage may not be the full extent of coverage you want.

As of December 2022, 15/30/5 liability coverage limits are the minimum required in California.
