Farmers Insurance

A Farmers Insurance® analysis of claims data from August 2023 through July 2026 found that wildlife-related collisions with cars account for a significant share of comprehensive losses in several states, particularly across the Upper Midwest, Northern Plains and Appalachian regions.

Farmers analyzed the percentage of animal collision losses compared to total comprehensive loss causes within each state. This approach provides a clear picture of where wildlife has the greatest impact on drivers relative to other comprehensive risks.

When are animal collisions most common?

Drivers should be especially alert during the fall months, when wildlife activity increases and animals are more likely to cross roadways.

Highest-risk months

October, November and December are typically the busiest months for animal collisions.

Highest-risk times of day

The risk of encountering wildlife is greatest around dawn, dusk and at night – especially on rural roads.

Reduced visibility and increased wildlife movement can make it harder for drivers to react safely

Does insurance cover hitting a deer?

Damage from hitting a deer or another animal is typically covered by comprehensive coverage – not collision coverage. That’s because comprehensive coverage generally helps pay for damage caused by events other than a collision with another vehicle or stationary object, including contact with animals. Comprehensive coverage is optional in most states, and coverage can vary based on the policy and circumstances of a claim. Drivers should consider reviewing their policy with an insurance agent to understand their coverage, deductible and limits and make sure the policy fits their needs.

How can drivers avoid an animal collision?

While no driver can eliminate the risk entirely, a few simple habits can help reduce the chances of a collision.

Remember these five tips:

  • Slow down in wildlife crossing areas.
  • Stay alert at sunrise and sunset, when animals are most active.
  • Use your high beams when safe and legal to do so.
  • Watch the roadside, not just the lane ahead.
  • Brake firmly and stay in your lane if an animal enters the road.
  • Avoid swerving whenever possible.

What should you do if you hit an animal with your car?

An animal collision can be scary, but taking a few key steps can help protect your safety.

Stop, check, call, document:

  • Move to safety. If possible, pull off the road.
  • Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Check for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is injured.
  • Stay away from the animal. An injured animal may be frightened and unpredictable.
  • Document the damage. Take photos of your car, the road, and surrounding areas if it is safe to do so.
  • Start a claim with your insurance company.

About the data

Farmers Insurance® analyzed claims data from August 1, 2023, through July 31, 2026. Rankings were based on the percentage of animal collision loss causes compared to total comprehensive loss causes within each state. By focusing on percentages rather than claim volume alone, the analysis provides a more comparable view of where wildlife-related collisions represent a larger share of roadway losses.
