How much can you save by bundling renters and car insurance?

Even a small percentage bundling discount can mean substantial savings. For example, a 7% bundling discount could save you $122 on your renters and auto insurance, based on the latest (2022) national cost figures from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Here’s how that works: If your car insurance costs the national average of $1,569, you’d save $109. And if your renters insurance is the national average of $185, you’d save $13 off your renters policy — for a total of $122.

Common questions about bundling renters insurance

An auto and renters bundle is shorthand for buying your car insurance policy and your renters insurance policy from the same insurer.

Typically, bundling saves you money on both policies, and you have the convenience of dealing with just one company — one agent, one customer portal, one login, one claims process. You could also get one bill to easily pay online.

You can bundle your insurance — or ask about bundling options — at any time.  But when it could make the most practical sense is when you’re making (or considering) changes in your insurance situation. For instance:

  • Renewal time, usually once a year or once every six months.
  • Major life events. Buying a home or a car, getting married (or divorced), or having children can all trigger changes in your insurance needs.
  • Adding a policy. Maybe you want to add umbrella coverage, or you bought an RV.
  • Changing insurers. If you’re dissatisfied with service or costs, bundling discounts can be part of your search for a new insurer.

Yes, you can bundle at any time. If you already have an auto policy and want to buy renters insurance from Farmers, as a bundle, the bundle discount typically will be applied from that point, even if both policies don’t renew at the same time. Ask about prorating your rates mid-term, or the bundled discount may apply only when your policy renews.

If you cancel one policy in a bundle, you’ll lose the bundle discount on your remaining policy or policies and your premium will go up.

If you cancel close to the end of your policy term, your new premium may apply upon renewal. If you cancel in the middle of your policy term, your new premium may be applied immediately. Some insurers may rewrite your remaining policy because your bundle affected coverage terms.

What you pay for auto insurance depends on several factors, including your driving record and where you garage your car. In general, the fewer accidents and traffic violations in your past, the less you will pay for auto insurance.

Renters insurance can be quite a bargain, when you consider the cost of replacing things like a cell phone, computer, furniture and other belongings if they’re damaged or stolen.

Because your landlord’s insurance generally covers your building, renters insurance is there to help cover your costs if your personal belongings — your furniture, rugs, computer, bike — are damaged in a covered event like a fire, theft or vandalism.
