Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover Theft?

Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover Theft?

Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover Theft?

Here’s the short answer:

  • Comprehensive coverage helps pay to replace your bike if it’s stolen.
  • This coverage is optional on motorcycle policies, but likely required if you have a loan.
  • Comprehensive also covers damage from vandalism, fire, weather and animals.
  • Special coverage is available for classic bikes that may go up in value.

Question I take precautions with my bike, but there’s no foolproof way to protect it from a determined thief. I hear stories all the time about motorcycles disappearing from garages and parking spots. If this happens to me, will my insurance cover it?

Nick Weiser is a Farmers Insurance® agent in Oxnard, California. He explains how to cover your motorcycle for theft.

Answer Your motorcycle policy can cover theft — so long as you comprehensive coverage in place. Comprehensive coverage covers losses caused by things other than a collision with a vehicle or stationary object. This can include theft as well as fire, vandalism, falling objects, hail and damage caused by animals.

Comprehensive coverage isn’t required by law, but nearly all the customers I’ve worked with choose to carry it. Without it, you will have to replace your stolen bike totally out of pocket. Farmers policies offer full replacement value, and you can get special coverage for classic motorcycles that may increase in value.

If you have comprehensive coverage and suspect your motorcycle has been stolen, make a police report and then call the Farmers claims department. Farmers professionals are available to assist you 24/7.
