Does Home Insurance Cover Property That My Child Takes to a Dorm?

Here’s the scoop on dorm coverage:

  • Your home policy can cover items that a household member takes off premises.
  • The amount of coverage is a percentage — 10 percent, for example — of your total contents coverage.
  • This is usually enough coverage for property that students take with them to college.
  • Certain valuables may need additional coverage.

Question Our son is leaving next week for his first year of college. We’ve already packed up most of his personal belongings for the trip. Now I’m starting to wonder — will his things be covered by our home insurance if he’s living in a dorm?

Sandy Widmer, a Farmers Insurance® agent in Casper, Wyoming, explains how your home policy can provide the appropriate coverage.

Answer As I tell customers when their kids leave for college, one thing you probably don’t have to worry about is insurance. Farmers home policies automatically come with a certain percentage of off-premises coverage. Farmers Smart Plan Home®, for example, provides up to 10 percent of your home contents coverage on items that a member of your household takes out of the house. This amount is usually enough to cover what students bring to a dorm. Let’s say you have $200,000 in coverage for the contents of your home. That translates to $20,000 in off-premise coverage.

If your child brings something valuable with them, like a musical instrument or video camera, you might need additional coverage for that specific item on your home policy — if you don’t have it already. This applies to any valuables in your home, not just ones that end up in a dorm. If you’re not sure whether something’s covered the way you want, ask your agent about it before school starts.
