Does Anything in My Home Warrant a Separate Insurance Policy or Coverage?

Does Anything in My Home Warrant a Separate Insurance Policy or Coverage?

Here’s the short answer:

  • Certain items in your home are prime targets for theft.
  • These include jewelry, artwork, furs and other valuables.
  • Extra coverage for these items can be added to your policy.
  • A separate policy may be needed for high-value collections.

Question I own some antiques and artwork that would be very costly to replace. In fact, they’re worth more than anything else in my house. Are they covered by my home insurance policy, or should I consider insuring them separately?

Theresa Simes is a Farmers Insurance® agent in Fountain Valley, California. She explains which items in your home you might want additional coverage for.

Answer Some items in your household are particularly attractive to thieves. You can probably guess what I’m talking about — jewelry, watches, fine art, firearms, fur coats and other portable things of high value. While most home policies provide some coverage for your treasures, the amounts can be far below their actual value. You might want more coverage beyond the base amounts listed on your policy if you want to ensure that you are covered for the value of these items. You can get this coverage by adding “scheduled floaters” to your existing policy.

A scheduled floater can cover a particular item — like a diamond ring or antique vase — up to its full appraised value. Whether your valuable is stolen or destroyed by a covered event like a fire, the floater will help cover your loss.

While most household items can be covered by scheduled floaters, you might want a separate insurance policy for possessions that exceed the available limits on a home policy. This is sometimes the case with large collections of art, wine or jewelry. Your agent can help as you explore your coverage options.
