Last updated July 23, 2020.

We reduced certain personal auto premiums by 25% for April and 15% for May. There’s nothing you need to do; we took care of it for you.

When fewer drivers are on the road, fewer car accidents happen. That’s why we reduced personal auto insurance premiums. The premium reductions that we are providing were based on and account for experience in March, April and May, and measured as 25% of the premium that would be due in April and 15% of the premium that would be due in May.

In New York, customers with Farmers personal auto insurance policies received a single credit equal to 40% of one month’s premium, based on your full-term premium as of May 7, 2020.

FAQs: Personal Auto Insurance Credits

You are eligible for the April credit if:

  • You have a Farmers-branded auto policy that was in force as of April 1, 2020, except in New York State.
  • You cancelled your policy after April 1, 2020; yes, you still qualify for the credit.

You are not eligible for the April credit if:

  • Your policy was out of force as of April 1, 2020, and reinstated on a later date;
  • You purchased your Farmers-branded policy after April 1, 2020; or
  • You have a Bristol West®-branded policy (unless you live in a state where it is mandated).

You are eligible for the May credit if:

  • You have a Farmers-branded auto policy that was in force as of May 1, 2020, except in New York State.
  • You cancelled your policy after May 1, 2020; yes, you still qualify for the credit.

You are not eligible for the May credit if:

  • Your policy was out of force as of May 1, 2020, and reinstated on a later date;
  • You purchased your Farmers-branded policy after May 1, 2020; or
  • You have a Bristol West-branded policy (unless you live in a state where it is mandated).

In New York State, customers with Farmers personal auto insurance policies will receive a single credit equal to 40% of one month’s premium. We will calculate this credit based on your full-term premium as of May 7, 2020.

You will be eligible for this credit if your Farmers personal auto insurance policy in New York was in force on May 7, 2020. Policies that were out of force on May 7 and that are reinstated on a date later in the month will not be eligible for the premium credit.

As of May 18, we have applied all credits to eligible accounts.

Please see our notice of additional provisions for New York State customers.

A separate credit has been processed for each qualifying personal auto policy.

The answer depends on your payment plan and account status:

  • If you pay monthly, or will be paying your bill within the next 60 days:

As of May 18, credits for April and May have been applied to your account.  You will see statement credits on your April and/or May bills, and the description on the billing statement will reference “COVID.”

  • If you pay your bill in full and last paid by credit, debit, or electronic funds transfer:

You will receive a refund electronically back to the method you paid with, along with a standard refund letter in the mail or an electronic notice in your Farmers.com account. Depending on processing timelines, your refund for the April and May credits may have been combined into one deposit.

  • If you pay your bill in full and paid by cash or check:

You will receive a refund by check along with our standard refund letter.  Depending on processing timelines, your payment for the April and May credits may be combined into one check. We anticipate refund checks should be mailed by the end of May.

Regardless of whether you are receiving a refund or a statement credit, each credit will show up immediately after it has been applied on your Farmers.com account. They will appear as separate payments on the payment history screen.  The description will reference “COVID.”

Here’s how the 25% credit for April was calculated:

  1. Start with your total full-term premium as of April 1, excluding any fees.
  2. Next, divide by the number of months in your policy term (6 or 12 months).
  3. Then multiply by 0.25. The result is one month of 25% credit.

For example, if on April 1 your full-term six-month premium was $1,000:

  • Take $1,000, divide by 6 months = $166.67.
  • Then multiply $166.67 x 0.25 = $41.67 premium credit.

The credit for May was calculated in the same way, but at a 15% rate. In step 3, multiply by 0.15.

No. We automatically applied these credits to all eligible accounts.

We are keeping a close eye on developments and will make a determination in the coming weeks. We will post new information to this page as it becomes available.

State-specific mandates will, of course, be honored.

FAQs: Coverage Extensions and Payment Assistance for Personal Insurance Customers

For Farmers Auto, Home, Umbrella or Specialty policyholders:

We automatically paused policy cancellations due to non-payment through May 21, 2020 in most states. However, your policy premiums will continue to accrue. Any unpaid balance will carry over to your next statement, without incurring late fees.

If your due date was on or after May 22, you may be eligible for extending the payment due date even further, but you must call us at 1 (888) 327-6335. Otherwise, payment due dates of May 22 and beyond will stay in place.

As a resident of Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon or Washington, in order to comply with applicable law, we will waive any late fees and pause midterm cancellation for non-payment. If you can pay your bill, or a portion of it, we recommend you do so to prevent a large balance due when normal billing operations resume.

If your policy is renewing and you are not able to pay your premium by your renewal date, your state’s Department of Insurance has asked us to extend your payment due date while continuing to provide you coverage.

If you need additional time to make a payment, please contact Farmers directly to discuss payment options that may be available to you.

For Farmers New World Life Insurance Company Policies:

We paused the lapse of any policies until June 1, 2020.

If your state’s rules allow you greater flexibility than the June 1 grace period, we will honor that state’s rule. Because payment and extension options will vary by policy type, contact us to learn more. Call 1-800-238-9671, Monday – Friday 7:00am - 7:00pm CT.

For Farmers Auto, Home, Umbrella or Specialty policyholders:

Yes, but you must contact us at 1 (888) 327-6335 to request an extension on your renewal. This enables us to extend your due date and waive any late fees.

Call center hours of operation:

  • Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT
  • Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT

NOTE:  If you live in Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon or Washington, in order to comply with applicable law we will waive any late fees and pause midterm cancellation for non-payment.

For Flood Insurance policies through the National Flood Insurance Program:

FEMA is offering the following options:

  • 120-day grace period for renewal payments
  • Extending the 30-day deadline to make an additional premium payment after receiving an underpayment notice

If your policy’s expiration date or underpayment notice is dated between February 13, 2020, and June 15, 2020, your renewal premiums or additional premium payments must be received by the NFIP insurer within 120 days of the expiration date to avoid a lapse in coverage.

Farmers has recognized that some customers have been financially challenged throughout the COVID crisis. In light of this fact, over the past two months we've allowed customers who were unable to pay their bill the ability to defer payment to their next statement.

Now that many stay-at-home guidelines are being relaxed, we resumed normal billing operations for most policies on May 22, 2020. (Extension dates may vary by state.) If you've deferred all or portions of your payment, when normal billing resumes, you will automatically receive a Notice of Cancellation. This means you will need to pay your bill in full by the date on your NOC in order to maintain your coverage.

If you need additional time to pay or would like to discuss possible payment options, please contact your Farmers agent or the appropriate Farmers billing department.
