Farmers Insurance agents, district managers and employees start fund to help rebuild tornado-damaged Page Middle School

Gloucester, VA (April 20, 2011) – Heavily-damaged Page Middle School in Gloucester County will soon be receiving financial and other assistance from Virginia-based Farmers Insurance agents, district managers and employees thanks to a special relief fund that the company has started.

“Last weekend’s severe windstorms that passed through the Gloucester area caused considerable damage,” said Riko Metzroth, state executive director for Farmers in Virginia.  “When events like this happen, the Farmers family of agents, district managers and employees come together to help, not just as an insurance company providing assistance to our customers, but also as fellow members of the community who are impacted by the destruction.

“That’s why we’ve decided to start a special fund to help Page Middle School with their short-term and longer-term needs,” added Metzroth.

John Hendrix, a long-time agent for Farmers in Gloucester and leader in the development of the special relief fund couldn’t believe the damage he saw after the tornado had passed through town.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said the local agent.  “As soon as I saw the damage caused to our local middle school, I knew I had to do something.  I’m just so proud that the entire Virginia Farmers family is getting behind this effort.”

Preliminary media stories have reported Gloucester County has suffered millions of dollars in damage, with hundreds of businesses and residences destroyed or damaged. Page Middle School, one of two middle schools in the county, had its roof blown off by the tornado that tore through the county.

“With the school (Page M.S.) closed indefinitely and students being asked to share campus facilities with neighboring Peasley Middle School, it’s clear the school and its teachers can use some extra help,” said Hendrix.  “We encourage everyone who can help to do so through local Farmers agents or by contacting the school directly.”

Those wishing to contribute to the special relief fund can send checks payable to “Page Middle School Relief Fund”,  c/o The Hendrix Agency, 7336 Main Street, Gloucester, VA  23061.
