When your child is home alone

 |
|
| |
- Make a phone list of emergency
numbers with the police and fire departments, your neighbors and
your place of work.
- Take fire precautions. You should have a working
smoke detector for every level of your home. Review and practice escape
routes. A fire extinguisher is a good idea.
- Install locks. Put deadbolts on all doors that
give access to the house, including the attached garage door. Deadbolts
should be anchored to the joists, not the molding.
- Check the alarm system. Make sure your children
know whether the home alarm is on or off and how to set it and disarm
it.
- Set some rules about when and how your child
should answer the door and the phone when you are not there.
