Civics
Bring local issues of importance into the classroom with these exercises that let students voice their opinions about current events.
Activities
Track Freedoms
Freedoms are never stolen, they're gradually eroded. Have your students make a list of freedoms that seem smaller than they used to be. Then post them and see if anyone is inspired to fight for a freedom before it disappears.
Create Your Own Case Study
Have students identify a local issue in the community, then develop a study of the issue. It's a great way to connect controversy with curriculum.
Housing the Homeless
Help students understand what it means to be homeless by having them contrast the items they need for survival with what those on the street need. Then divide the class into groups and have them role-play using a local building near the school to house the homeless.
