Farmers Insurance and 710 ESPN Seattle bring funding support to Eastern Washington to build baseball fields for the youth in Cheney Washington.
Cheney, WA (September 14, 2009)--Farmers Insurance Group® is proud to announce the City of Cheney and the West Plains Little League as the winner of its “Improve A Field Contest.” In partnership with 710 ESPN Seattle, Farmers will donate $10,000 towards building baseball fields for youth in the Cheney Community.
The City of Cheney is a small community just 20 miles southwest of Spokane and home to Eastern Washington University. In recent years this family-centered community has experienced tremendous growth in youth recreation programs; most notably the West Plains Little League. The West Plains Little League was founded in 2004 and began their first year with 330 baseball players aged 5-12. The league has continually grown each of the past six years, and has reached over 570 players aged 5-14 on 47 different teams. In addition to growing numbers, the West Plains Little League has recently added a Girls Softball Division, as well as a Challenger Division for mentally and physically impaired players.
This rapid and extreme growth experienced by the West Plains Little League has placed an incredible demand for field space on the City of Cheney Parks system. The West Plains Little League and other youth sports agencies have grown to the point where the Park system is no longer large enough to meet the needs of the youth in the community. In response, the City is working aggressively to expand our parks by building additional fields in the first phase of the 50 acre park site.
Dozens of groups applied for the $10,000 donation and after a month selection process, the City of Cheney and the West Plains Little League were selected as the winner. Although this program has been in place for several years, this is the first time that an Eastern Washington community has been selected. A ceremony to receive the donation has been scheduled at the Wren Pierson Community Center parking lot on Monday, September 21st at 3:30pm. Representatives from 710 ESPN Seattle, Farmers Insurance, West Plains Little League, and the City of Cheney will be present at the ceremony.
