Farmers brings “Blessings in a Backpack” to San Diego

Charity for under privileged children part of Farmers Insurance Open

LA JOLLA, CA – (January 26, 2011) Farmers Insurance is proud to bring to the San Diego community a new program benefitting hundreds of local families. Called “Blessings in a Backpack,” this new program is designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal free and reduced meal program, and may not have any or enough food on the weekends.

Farmers was made aware of the “Blessings in a Backpack” program by Zurich spokesperson PGA TOUR golfer Justin Rose and his wife Kate.

“This program is very close to our hearts because Kate and I know Blessings in a Backpack fills a crucial void for children who might otherwise go hungry,” said Justin Rose, PGA TOUR player. “I can’t expect to play good golf if I’m not properly nourished so how can we expect kids to go a full weekend without enough to eat and then be able to focus on learning?”

During the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open, on Wednesday, January 26 Farmers executives and PGA TOUR players led by Justin Rose and his wife, Kate, will help stuff backpacks for 500 children at Doris Miller Elementary School in San Diego area. The Farmers-supported program will help provide meals for students in these schools for the entire 2011 school year.

“This unique program has lasting value for the community,” said Kevin Kelso, Chief Marketing Officer of Farmers Insurance. “As huge supporters of education, Farmers is proud to be able to help these families, especially when it leads to better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance for the kids.”

As further demonstration of its confidence in the “Blessings in a Backpack” program, Farmers will continue this program in San Diego for a minimum of three years.

The Roses will be joined by other PGA TOUR families and a number of Farmers executives and their families to stuff the backpacks at 3:00 pm on Wednesday. January 26 in the Pro-Am tent located near the Driving Range at Torrey Pines Gold Course.

The backpacks will be delivered to Doris Miller Elementary school on the morning of Friday, January 28. Kate Rose and other PGA TOUR wives will lead the delivery of the backpacks to the school.
