Farmers “tees off” for kids

Golf clinic is part of Farmers Insurance Open

LA JOLLA, CA – (January 25, 2011) Farmers Insurance and the Century Club of San Diego announce a special golf clinic teaching kids valuable skills on and off the course. Farmers and the Century Club will host a Pro Kids, The First Tee of San Diego Junior Golf Clinic on the North Course of Torrey Pines at 3:30 p.m., on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. The clinic is for 120 children from Pro Kids, Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA.

“This clinic shows golf is more than just a game,” said Kevin Kelso, Chief Marketing Officer of Farmers Insurance. “It builds character and discipline - traits that will serve these young people well in life.”

Farmers-sponsored PGA TOUR player and winner of the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open, Ben Crane, will be on hand at the clinic for local San Diego Pro Kids students and other young golfers.

“Golf has been great to me,” said Crane. “The focus, the commitment to excellence and the sportsmanship of the game have helped me achieve success, both on the course and in my personal life. Being able to share some of these important lessons with local youth is humbling and enriching.”

The First Tee uses the game of golf to teach valuable life skills and core values such as honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship to young people. Pro Kids annually serves more than 2,000 young people in the San Diego area.

“Everyone at Pro Kids, The First Tee of San Diego, from the kids, to the staff and the many volunteers do an outstanding job of helping local youth achieve success,” said Tom Wilson, Executive Director, Century Club of San Diego. “They are a terrific partner here in San Diego and we, in partnership with Farmers Insurance, are proud to be able to support their continued work.”

During the clinic, Farmers will present The First Tee with a check for $48,000 to support the Greater San Diego area. Farmers first teamed up with The First Tee in 2009 during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

“I am impressed with the level of integrity and genuine care The First Tee shows to these young people,” said Mhayse Samalya, President of Farmers Business Insurance. “I am thrilled to be a part of something that is truly life-changing for hundreds of kids who may not get this opportunity otherwise.”

Additionally, Farmers will partner with The First Tee to institute The First Tee National School Program at eight local schools in the San Diego area.

“We are grateful for Farmers Insurance’s support of The First Tee and hope this is the beginning of a productive relationship that will bring The First Tee’s quality life skills education and core value programming to more young people in the San Diego area and beyond,” said Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of The First Tee. “The First Tee’s success is in large part to companies like Farmers Insurance that believe the investment in young people is one worth making.”

The First Tee National School Program is a nationwide effort by The First Tee to teach elementary school students motor skills related to the lifelong sport of golf along with core values associated with the game. The National School Program was developed under the guidelines of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. Currently, the National School Program is in more than 4,000 schools.
