SALT LAKE CITY, UT- (October 21, 2009)—“Within five blocks of Riley Elementary School, there are four memorials set up for kids who have recently lost their lives,” noted Third District Juvenile Judge Andrew Valdez. He was talking to a group of concerned parents from the school located at 1410 S. 800 West Salt Lake City, about ways to keep their kids away from gangs. “Positive peer groups, positive role models, positive activities make a huge difference in children's lives," Judge Valdez said.
After listening to Judge Valdez, parents and students had the opportunity to talk to neighborhood representatives who were also there trying to help out in the anti-gang movement.
Farmers Agent Mike Fisher from West Jordan Utah, was one of those representatives who set up a booth and handed out copies of “A Parent’s Guide to Gangs.” “The guide book offers vital facts that parents and caregivers can use to help identify early youth involvement in street gangs,” stated Fisher. “More importantly, the guide book assists in identifying risk factors that facilitate gang membership.” For a copy of the guide book, parents or caregivers can contact Mike Fisher at 801-352-2779. Riley Elementary Principal Bobbie Kirby has asked Fisher to participate in another gang prevention meeting this December and hand out the guide book.
